Dust, who likes dust? I am constantly cleaning up dust and dirt from my floor. It is a nuisance, a daily chore, an action that will earn no thanks and garner no reward and will inevitably be repeated tomorrow.
Dust, dirt and soil were one of the first small blessings I recognized being a farmer’s wife. What once was something I saw as a barrier to a clean house has become so much more. It is a fundamental building block to our livelihood. It is a sign my husband has been working hard. It is a sign the ground is ready for planting or harvest. It is a sign we need to pray for rain or sunshine. When there are bits of green it is a sign of fertility and new life.
"Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return" is a simple phrase that has taken on a profound new meaning in recent years. Without preparation the dirt is just dirt. Each year we ready the soil for planting, adding fertility and nutrients so the harvest will be bountiful. Likewise, we need to ready ourselves so that when God is ready to harvest we have great gifts to give.
Turn your dirt into soil and ready yourself for the harvest.
Lenten Daily Challenge: Attend an Ash Wednesday service and wear the cross of ashes all day.
